The Sniper Rifle is a weapon used in the 2005 King Kong movie and the video game adaptation.

King Kong (2005)[]

Rifles modelled on the Mauser Gewehr 1898 bolt-action rifle are used in the film by the crew of the Venture. Though firing a more powerful round (7.92x57mm Mauser), they tend to be less effective in the film overall than the rapid-fire Thompsons, possibly due to the Gew 98's straight bolt handle (which slows down reload time compared to the rate of fire of a bolt-action rifle that has a turned-down bolt handle), "cock on opening" bolt-action and five-round magazine. Carl Denham is also seen using a Gewehr 98 rifle as a club against the giant insects in the chasm.

In the game[]

The Gewehr 98 is capable of firing long distance and is used as a sniper in-game. The Sniper Rifle is a slow firing and reloading weapon, but has a built in scope, allowing for high precision shots when using head viewing and boasts an average firepower strength. The only thing is the bolt is only cranked when reloading, it fires like it's semi-automatic. Reloading itself is rather odd, as only one round is loaded into the rifle.

Manual description[]

Sniper rifle: this gun has a very long range but a very low firing rate. It is particularly useful for taking out enemies without them seeing you. The magazine contains five 7.62-mm cartridges.

Appearances[]

It is first available at the point that jack and Ann need to wait for Carl and Hayes to lower a bridge into the Skull Islander's territory. Jack loses it when being caught and restrained by the Skull Islanders.
